Making the transition from veterinary student to working in a professional practice is a big step.

Through Acton Veterinary Group’s Veterinary Externship Program, we’re here to support you as you move forward in your career. As a student, you’ll get the opportunity to work alongside a team and participate in all aspects of patient care. You will get an invaluable, realistic look at life as a veterinary professional with client interaction and firsthand experience in a hospital setting.

The Experience

Participants in the Externship Program experience the typical caseload of a small animal practice. Under the supervision of our doctors and staff and in accordance with Texas’s practice act, you will gather histories, perform physical exams, assist with surgery, assist with anesthesia, perform treatments and skills as required, develop client communication skills, polish your clinical/technical skills and learn our approach to business.

Where You’ll Be Working

We have two animal hospitals in Granbury, Texas: Acton Animal Hospital and Morgan Street Animal Hospital. You may be asked to work in both or either locations (but they’re very near to each other, so it’s not much of a hike!). Granbury is a fine little town. Being 30 minutes from Fort Worth means it has all the best features of a big city, with all the coziness and tranquility of a country town. In the center of our town is Lake Granbury, a peaceful spot for recreational past times like boating and fishing. Our historic downtown square offers plenty to do and see, and always has something going on at the weekend!

Program Guidelines

Externships are flexible—they can range from two to eight weeks during the year, but are typically two or three weeks in length. Your schedule will include weekdays and Saturdays. There are no afterhours emergencies. You must be enrolled in an accredited Veterinary program and authorized to work in the United States. Program placement requires submission of a CV or resume and completion of the application located below.
